Ironton Update - by Terry McCowan

(May 2009)

Ironton is progressing somewhat.  Instead of tearing down Memorial Hall, a local veterans group is trying to obtain grants and donations to save it.  Friends of Ironton are raising money to put in a water park for especially kids (or those who think they are kids!) downtown at 2nd and Vernon Sts.  You can buy a brick with 4 lines on for $100 (4x8) or larger ones for more.  A new Children's Hospital is opening this summer on Washington Street next to the Social Security Office.  The old Lawrence County General (River Valley) Hospital is now a big field of grass. The First Baptist Church is building a fitness and education building on the corner of 4th and Vernon.  A new City National Bank has built a new building and opened last month on 5th and Park Avenue.  The new elementary school is finished and will open in the fall.  We have some great restaurants now...Toro Loco, Austyn's and Melini Cucina's.  And there is the Fuzzy Duck on the river at Center Street Landing.  I think the saying should be "Ironton has awoke and is ready to roar!"

(Note: Larry Noble is alive and well. James Bowman was the person who should have been identified as having died during the Viet Nam War).

Ironton Update - by Diana (Searles) Goodall

(Sept, 2008)

The demolition continues with site prep at the old high school. I see lots of heavy equipment and materials. Not much else. As for the town itself, they are behind the demolition of the hospital.

You should see the new addition to the library. It is really nice. It now covers a larger portion of that city block. I like to go down every now and then, The town is going to save the Ro-Na, demolish Memorial Hall and we are going to get some sort of health care facility out where State Route 52 intersects with Route 141. St Mary's and some physicians are backing that plan. Immanuel Methodist Church on 5th Street is closed now.

Please enjoy the site and send any comments or suggestions to the site webmaster.
